The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, has announced that the government will reimburse small employers (with fewer than 250 employees) any Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) they pay to employees, for the first 14 days of sickness.
We understand that this a temporary measure to help insulate businesses against the impact of coronavirus. SSP is currently paid at £94.25 per week. The Chancellor estimates that will cost up to £2 billion and help up to 2 million businesses.
According to press reports, the government is planning to bring in measures so that workers absent due to coronavirus are eligible for SSP from their first day of absence (rather than the 4th day under current rules).
