Having marked International Women’s day last week it seems only fitting to celebrate the achievements of female business owners.

The Law Society has reported that, out of the 9,403 Law firms existing in England and Wales in 2015, approximately 34% were ‘majority-owned’ by women. This is significantly higher than the percentage of women small business owners in other sectors, and shows the diversity and progression of the legal sector in particular, an area historically dominated by men.

Not only does this show how far society has come with regard to equality, but Law Society president Robert Bourns has acknowledged the benefits to businesses of having “strong diversity, and inclusion policies and practices that help attract both clients and the best talent”.

Our own Directors have been Working Mothers since their children were very young, juggling parenthood with the demands of a busy and challenging career. Whilst Jane Lodeto continues to run between client appointments, school governor meetings and piano lessons, Jane Elgar is enjoying the fruits of her labours proudly seeing her daughter about to qualify as a solicitor herself.

We still have a long way to go in terms of women’s rights in the workplace and sadly, as recent media reports have shown with the ‘dress code’ scandal, inequality still exists.
